Orlando Attractions

Orlando is known worldwide as a kingdom of fun ruled by Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney World Resort alone covers about 47 square miles, which is double the size of Manhattan in New York. But Orlando in fact thrives with dozens of exciting attractions totally unrelated to Sir Disney’s entertainment. There is no question that Walt Disney gets the credit for jump-starting Orlando tourism, but there were few other pioneers before him. In 1936 Dick Pope Sr. opened cypress gardens and became known as “Father of Tourism”. But the first stone into modern tourism wall of fame was laid even earlier, when Mr. John B. Steinmentz became inventive after losing his citrus crops to a devastating freeze of 1895, and turned his packing house into a skating rink, built a toboggan slide into nearby springs and also added a bathhouse and a picnic area. In 19th century Orlando’s main commodities were cotton, cattle and citrus groves. After series of unfortunate man-provoked events and severe hurricanes it became clear that citrus industry was the safest bet, so people started getting “citrus fever”. A century later, in 1971, along came the “mouse fever” changing Orlando’s image forever.
